I have a old style JD 3020 w/ 148 loader. Recently the hyraulic pump started to whine and then the loader started to get air in the lines and it gradually got worse until i couldn't move it at all. I also started to loose power steering and brakes off and on. Finally when i took the tractor out of park and went to move it hesitated a few second like it had to build up pressure. And the last two times i shut the tractor off air came out the breather cap like it was pressurized with air. The tractor has no major leaks. If anyone give me some ideas as to what my problem might be i would greatly appreciate it. Thank You

before anything check oil level. even small leaks can add up to a low oil level, especially with a loader.

Have you tried changing the hydraulic filters? That's another simple and relatively inexpensive check.

I assume it's a powershift, since you mention it seemed to have to "build up pressure" before moving. The first thing to check is the transmission sump screen, which pre-filters the oil prior to it going to the transmission pump. The transmission pump supplies oil to operate the transmission AND supplies charge oil to the main hydraulic pump. If the screen is plugged or the tranny pump is weak, it would cause the symptoms you describe.
