2 cylinder diesel smoking after oil change

We recently purchased an 80 that ran flawlessly until we changed the oil. After changing the oil and filling it with Rotella 15w40, the tractor now smokes an awful lot. What could have caused this? Should I just switch back to straight 30 weight oil?

I know that one problem is operating temperature, but this didn't seem to matter before. Thanks for any suggestions.

Back in the late 60's, I bought a used 820 from the JD dealer. He told me the previous owner was using AMOCO oil in it. I had always used Mobil oils and lubricants so when I changed oil and filter I changed to Mobil. The first day I used the tractor in the field it used a couple of qts. The second day the same. It had previously used no oil. I changed back to AMOCO and it never used oil again (until many years and hundreds of hours later).

Gee, I hope it isn't anything serious. My only thought is that you could give it a workout, and see if the smoking stops.

Maybe you stirred up some stuff on the bottom of the engine. If you get a chance to work it, change the oil again. It only holds 3 1/2 gallons!

Andy's comments make sense, but I hope that is not the case!

I have Rotella in mine. It didn't seem to affect it any when I changed from whatever was in there before. Of course, that doesn't help you any...

Three years ago I changed oils in a tractor. I went to a much better quality of oil. The tractor began using oil greatly. The way I figured the rings had worn from the poorer quality oils, but at the sametime the clearances had been filled in with carbon. When I changed to the new oil the detergents cleaned everything up. This left excessive clearances and the subsequent oil consumption. Needless to say a ring job fixed the problem.

Yeh that was the problem in the early days of detergent oil. People had been using non det and when they changed what you say happened. Blamed the oil for ruining their engine.
