Power-Trol Rebuild Question, Clooney?

I've got a fairly common problem with my power-trol. It seems to be leaking oil into the engine. It also sinks down over several minutes.

I'm planning on rebuilding the whole thing and replacing all the seals and gaskets, but I've got a couple of questions for you. The tractor is a 1953 model 50 with live hydraulics and live PTO.

First, is the problem of loosing power-trol fluid into the engine a problem with the gasket(s) on the power-trol housing or is it likely to be a problem with the pump?

Second, the manual suggests that I will have to take the PTO off the tractor before I remove the Power-Trol (rockshaft) housing. Is this true or does the whole thing come off in one piece?

Third, I'm assuming the slow leak-down of the lift arms is due to a worn seal on the lift cylinder piston?

Fourth, there is no fourth but I'm open to any other suggestions (seals to replace, hints etc) that you might think of.

Fifth, this should really be the fourth but I just now remembered it. It seems that running the PTO makes the Power-Trol system loose fluid much faster. I know it eventually causes the engine oil to overfill because it will leak out behind the clutch overnight.

Thanks for all your help and wisdom,
John

John, you ask

Quote: First, is the problem of loosing power-trol fluid into the engine a problem with the gasket(s) on the power-trol housing or is it likely to be a problem with the pump? >>>

_That is most likely a seal leaking inside the P/T pump up on the engine governor.. When the leak is a gasket at the rear housing the trans usually ends up overfull not the engine [SEE #5 below before doing this]

Quote: Second, the manual suggests that I will have to take the PTO off the tractor before I remove the Power-Trol (rockshaft) housing. Is this true or does the whole thing come off in one piece?" >>>

_No, the rockshaft housing will come off PTO & all.. Just be careful of bending the front PTO shaft when pulling the rear housing... Before pulling that heavy rear housing you should try just re-sealing the piston.. That can be done by only pulling the P/T rear small valve housing then working the piston out the rear.. [SEE #5 below before doing this]

Quote: Third, I'm assuming the slow leak-down of the lift arms is due to a worn seal on the lift cylinder piston?" >>>

_That sounds like the most likely place.. It probably isnt related to the P/T oil in the engine though.. [SEE #5 below before doing this]

Quote: Fourth, there is no fourth but I'm open to any other suggestions (seals to replace, hints etc) that you might think of>>>

_I would re-seal the pump first then use it a while & if all thats left is the leak down problem then re-seal the P/T piston.. If re-sealing the pump doesnt stop the oil into the engine problem then you can address that at the same time as the piston re-sealing job.. You biggest headache will be getting those darn hydraulic lines loose from the rear housing & pump.. Be REAL CAREFUL as most of those lines are hard to came by.. [SEE #5 below before doing this]

Quote: Fifth, this should really be the fourth but I just now remembered it. It seems that running the PTO makes the Power-Trol system loose fluid much faster. I know it eventually causes the engine oil to overfill because it will leak out behind the clutch overnight>>>

_OK after reading this all bets on the above are off That oil leaking from behind the clutch pulley means the TRANSMISSION is probably over-full & that means the Power-Trol is probably leaking into the trans.. . For that repair the entire rear housing will have to come off.. In that case most likely the leak down & leaking of fluid into the trans could have a common tie & that would be the P/T piston housing cylinder base gasket While the rear housing is off I would also suggest you replace the PTO pump seals & also reseal the rockshaft piston Pull the trans fill/check plug & if it is over full suspect a blown rockshaft cylinder gasket..

Any questions just post back or E-Mail..

Thanks for your advice! I'm planning on pretty much going in and replacing all the seals and gaskets. It helps to know however what is most in need of attention.

I've got new parts on order. Looks like it will be taking up most of my weekend.

Thanks,
John
