LX 178 Hydrostatic Transmission

The rear axle of my tractor broke away from the frame causing the transmission to lose power. Even after the dealer reattached the axle, my forward and reverse haven't been the same. I have replaced the drive belt and adjusted the belt tension but with little effect. Any assist appreciated.

Ken, I'm not the mower guru around here, but I'll get out a LX 178 manual and see what I can find. We've got a BUNCH of LXs out, and don't have many problems with you. I'd say Deere did good to stand behind the machine and repair it for free, but there is probably a linkage problem there somewhere. I'll post back if I can find something to help.

Seems to me like the dealer didn't fix the entire problem. Maybe the linkage was bent reducing pedal travel and speed or the axle tweaked some other component. Take it back to the dealer and have them take another look. Or, if you can compare to another 176, 178 or 188 (same linkage/trans/axle) maybe you can spot something different between your tractor and the others.

I compared the actual speed to that specified in the manual and returned it to the dealer several times. Finally just gave up and decided to live with it. The mower is over 12 years old and may be nearing its life.

I suppose it's possible that the axle letting go affected the hydro in some way. Maybe overstressing the pump momentarily causing it to weaken which might explain your reduced speed since it happened.....

Well, I finally decided to disassemble the LX178 and work on the transmission. After removing the seat and cowling I could see where the linkage controlling the hydrostatic was rubbing the transmission housing and was not able to travel through its entire range when the speed pedal was depressed. Examining this further I discovered that the John Deere mechanic who repaired my broken rear axle had failed to include the spacer washers on the hydro linkage during reassembly. After replacing them and readjusting the linkage it worked like new.
I gave this one to my son and purchased a new GX255.

When I inspected the transmission drive belt it seemed too loose,even with the idler pulley set for maximum tension.The belt is part #M110978 CPT. The dealer says that is the correct # but I don't know if it is.When the rear axle broke away, the dealer was planning on charging for the repair but I contacted the company and they agreed to fix it as a design defect.

Deere stood behind a failure on a 10+ year old product, and you're recommending switching brands. That makes a lot of sense. Of course, at least the Deere actually HAS some trade-in value...

I doubt there's much trade-in $$$$ in an LT. Their reputation is actually pretty poor. Very poor Hydro in them, Most I've heard of don't have enough tractive power to move themselves up small hills let alone pull anything. And if it's been back to the dealer several times and still isn't fixed Yes I would switch dealers and/or brands. And yes, If I was buying a new Lawn & Garden tractor it would be a Kubota or Simplicity. But then My 36 year old Cub Cadet still pushes snow, grades driveways, plows gardens, mows My 2-1/2 acre yard, Pulls My Trac-Vac, etc. etc. It's rearend is what all the good Nat'l Quarter-scale Puller's use in their pulling tractors. Can You imagine if this tractor fell apart in a difficult situation like mowing a road bank or something and injured the operator? And Deere's already admitted to "design flaws"? Yes, I know I'd be buying a different color next time around.

I decided to tackle the slow transmission problem myself since the dealer (Central Lawn and Garden Huntsville Al)can't seem to fix it. Turned out they had left a spacer washer off where the linkage enters the transmission. Result was interference preventing full travel of the linkage. I added a couple of washers and it now works great.
