My JD 60 has rust in the gas tank. I plan on coating it this summer. Which is better POR 15 or Cream?
Thanks for the info,
John

I just did a tank for a motorcycle same problem much smaller scale. I had pin hole leaks also. To clean it inside I went to the dollar store and bought THE WORKS brand toilet cleaner $1.00 a bottle. It is Hydrocloric acid it did a fine job of cleaning it up. The hard part is drying it out without it flash rusting. I used some good moisture displacing penetrating oil. Then blowed dry then used thinner to remove oil when dry. I picked up some sealer at the local radiator & gas tank shop called RED KOTE made by Damon Chemical in Alliance Ohio it is the best ! I don't have a phone number for them I'll try a net search and get back.

I used POR 15 for the tank on my John Deere A. It worked very well for me. The trick is you have to do exactly as the instructions say. The tank must be dry, dry, dry when the instructions say dry. I did mine 4 years ago. Good luck

John,

I would not use por 15 as I haven't had good luck with it but maybe thats just me. Not sure about the cream either. I haven't heard about it. Here's what I did last year for my model A gas tank.
1. Get a new box of 50 or 100 5/16 by 1 inch bolts. Put them in the tank with some diesel to help loosen the crud and rust. Shake the tank vigorously for 10 -15 minutes or until it looks shiny on the inside. Use a magnet to fish them out. Tedious but it only takes a couple of minutes.
2. Clean up the outside of the tank with sandpaper or other abrasive and fix any rust holes. Jb weld works ok. I would try not to arc, mig or gas weld a tank. Don't like the pyrotechnics.
3. Use Jasco's Metal etch on the inside of the tank to prep for good adhesion when you seal it. Be sure to rinse the inside of tank with water very thoroughly when done and then make sure the tank is absolutely dry inside before applying the sealer.
4. I used Bill Hirsch sealer. Follow the directions and it will turn out nice. 5. Lastly, paint the outside of the tank.

Maybe others will have different ideas but this seemed to work well for me. Good luck. John
