Hello, How many HP does a 4240 have?. Did these tractors have a reversible PTO (meaning I could take the shaft out and reverse it to have 540), because I noticed the one at the local dealer had a 1,000RPM pto.
Thanks

My 4240 is rated 110 hp, puts out 125. The pto is 540/1000. Two separate shafts, one in a storage position while the other one is in the use position. The shafts are different, and engage different gears within the tractor to obtain the proper rpm, just like the 20, 30, 50 series, under about 150 hp. The storage location for the unused shaft is above and to the left of the used shaft. Just remove a snap ring from each location to pull the shaft and interchange them. Takes a minute or less to switch speeds. If you park the tractor a bit downhill, there is little oil loss. The 540 is always easier to engage, with the 1000 it may take a bit of turning, etc. to get it to fit inside where it belongs. Do not force them in- you don't need a hammer- just find the right rotation of the shaft and collar and they slip in.

Thanks for the info!, I'm not really a JD man so I was totally unaware of another pto.

They were about 110 PTO hp and i think all of them had 540/1000 PTO. There may be a few with just 1000 but i've never seen one.

This one had just 1,000RPM. Did JD have the dual PTO's like International did?.
