I took off the small cover on the back of pto shaft, and removed the pump and gears. The small housing has a seal to keep oil from leaking to the outside, but what do you change to keep the 90 wt. from getting in the hyd. oil. There is a bushing towards the front of the powertrol that the shaft runs through, then a small gap about half inch wide with a hole at the bottom for gear oil to get to the bushing, then a brass washer and spring. The bearing is still on the shaft, but nothing else. Can it be fixed without taking the powertrol off. It's a 52 G.My manual is not real clear yet, any help is appreciated, Ken.

I believe there should be a packing and thrust washer ahead of the spring, operating as a 'slip-fit' seal. Check your parts manual to be certain. I've seen these packings disintegrate, allowing gear oil to flow freely into the hyd pump. When done, it doesn't hurt to use the real GL-1 140w gear lube, as its viscosity will help keep it from going where it doesn't belong. Make sure when you put the pump housing together you only use shellac to seal the castings - Neither RTV or gasket paper will work.

Thanks for the reply, my packing must be gone because i did'nt see anything but a washer and spring. I don't know if oil was leaking inside because i got the tractor not running. Thanks again, Ken.

RTV is a silicone gasketing compound, lots of times its blue, high temp applications it is usually copper type and an orangish color. Shellac is gasketing shellac I usually use on head gaskets, rad. core gaskets and other places. Mine is in small bottle and says Indian Head Shellac on it.
