I just bought a 1954 40T last week. When I first drove it ran fine. When I got home with it and unloaded it the muffler got cherry red it about 5 minutes. Don't know where to look for the problem?

HOT STUFF! WE HAD A 1956 JD 420 CRAWLER WITH A HORIZONTAL MUFFLER TO GET THRU THE WOODS AND SWAMPS. THAT MUFFLER METAL WAS BLACK WHEN COLD BUT RED HOT WHEN RUN AFTER DUSK. IT WORKED HARD FOR 35 YEARS THEN SOLD FOR A GOOD PRICE. IF YOUR OIL PRESSURE IS GOOD AND THE ENGINE REV's UP AND DOWN YOU HAVE A 40T KEEPER. GOOD LUCK.

our 40 was showing the muffler getting very hot. It didn't run very well either. I set the timing back just a hair. it doesn't get hot now and also runs better.Timing too far advanced.

I've never known advanced timing to make for hot exhaust. Advanced timing will make engine knock, or be hard cranking ("kicks back"). Retarded timing makes the exhaust hot because the cylinder "charge" lights off late, and escapes as hot exhaust, rather than making useful power. You must have advanced your timing, rather than retarded it!

As for the "40" with the hot exhausr, also check the centrifugal advance in the distributor for wear and free operation.

Couple of other have told you already, that the 40 muffler will get red at night, Mine did. Didn't look red in the daytime but at night it was scary, seeing that its about 1 foot away from the gas filler cap.

We bought a new 40T in 1954. The first time I used it in the field at night I looked up and the muffler was red hot. I scared me and I cut the switch and jumped off. It seems this is normal and you do not see it in the daytime.

Was this at night ? It may be normal but it did seem to happen fast. My M muffler gets completly red at night when working, and everything is fine on it.

1.) Unburned fuel from 1 cylinder not firing.

2.) Late ignition timing... could the distributor have moved in it's clamps?

3.) Lean fuel mixture.
