john deere question. just wondering what a rock shaft is? I see it in the adds listed as what sounds like an option. just curious. I do not farm now but grew up on one and farmed for a couple of years on my own, that was 25 yrs ago. I do enjoy the site and thanks in advance.

The rockshaft is what operates a 2-point or 3-point hitch, and is what the lift arms are attached to. They're normally hydraulically operated, either by an internal cylinder or by external cylinders on some older tractors and on a lot of the newer tractors. On tractors not equipped with a hitch, they were used with various linkages in order to operate equipment mounted to the tractor. Deere was the first to offer a hydraulic rockshaft, when they introduced the Power-Lift. They later improved upon that with the Power-Trol, which offered cylinder or rockshaft control, and then the Custom Power-Trol, which was more refined yet. Pretty much every new tractor you see today has a rockshaft, but for several decades, you could buy tractors without one. They were often left off of standard-tread or "wheatland" tractors, as those machines were primarily used as drawbar power with drawn implements, not mounted ones.
