I am about to put the oil pump back into my tractor. I read once you could pack the pump with some type of grease to get oil pressure faster after initial starting of the engine. Has anyone ever done this and what kind of grease would you use? Or is this a crazy idea? Thanks.

I thought Clooney's answer in the thread above about using grease or oil on the distributor camshaft was interesting, particularly in light of your question about mixing them in the oil pump. Personally, I can only contribute one thought. YEARS ago I worked with an excellent VW mechanic. He felt that one thing he should do when he overhauled an engine was to coat the main bearings with grease so they would be fully lubricated when the engine was turned over the first time. As logical as that seemed at the time, I can't tell you how many newly overhauled engines came back to us because the main bearings went out. Personally, I wouldn't use grease.

I use vaseline, or automatic transmission assembly lube. Either disolves into the engine oil upon startup. Some types of grease do not disolve into the oil, at least not immediately.

If the pump is immersed in oil, such as on a two-cylinder, it's probably not necessary. Just putting some oil on the gears during assembly would be fine. On newer Deere engines where the pump isn't below oil level, I use white assembly grease and give all the pump components a light coat, in order to create a better "seal" and quicker priming at startup.

The pump in my model "D" sits in oil. I coated everything in it in engine oil when I assembled it and it worked fine. Mine is a hand-start model. It took a lot of rotations of the crankshaft to fill the oil filter and push oil to the gauge to register pressure. If you are in doubt about the gauge, suggest you connect in a new {known good} gauge to confirm good pressure.

You can use some assembly lube,STP,or plain old engine oil. The idea is to have some lubrication in the pump and to help "prime it" .I wouldn't use grease as it may clog a passage,or restrict startup oil flow.Spin the tractor over with the starter with the plugs out before you start it to fill the filter and get some oil flowing.
