Magneto problems

Guys, I have a 1932 John Deere GP that when i put it up for the winter last fall ran like a swiss watch. Just a few days ago I went out to fire it up and got nothing. Upon investigation it was discovered that I have no spark. Points and gap appear good and no other obvious problems with exception of the magnets. It seems like they have lost there magnetism. Is this feasible and if so how can I go about getting them recharged if possible. The magneto is only about 2 yrs old and was purchased completely rebuilt from a reputible source. Thanks for your help. Jim

Jim,
I assume you have a Fairbanks Morse R2 "John Deere" magneto on your GP?

How did you check for spark? A new plug should be used, with the body properly grounded to the tractor.

If indeed there is no spark, first thing I would do is take a piece of emory cloth, fold it in half, and pull it 10 times between the points (when they are in the closed position to provide spring tension) to remove any oxidation (formation of oxidation is common over winter). If they are clean and shiny, make sure the spark plug wires are firmly set in the magneto wire outlets - it is easy for them to come loose. Beyond that I would check with the place you bought the magneto from and see what they suggest. I would doubt the magnets would loose enough magnetism over winter to not provide a spark.

I have had that happen. Most of the time it turns out to be the condensor or the points. Even if they look clean they may still need to be taken out and cleaned up. Don't know about the magnetism. Maybe Clooney can help with that one.
