Does anyone have any tips or tricks on how to get the studs out of the head? I havent started to tear it down yet, but it looks like that is gonna be a problem. And does anyone know of any other 'snags' I may run into while changing the gasket? Im thinking I'll put a new manifold on, though the old one dont look all that bad.

Had the same problem with a JD AR. I took my acytelene torch and heated each stud at the base in the head. I lucked out and was able to remove all 4 studs this way .Then just used bolts instead of studs. Sure saved having to remove head or fan shaft.

I think I would pull the head off... Take it to a machine shop and have them take the studs out..Get the valves ground while I was at it.. If the valves are sunk very deep, you can have Hard seats installed.. The manifold studs are hard to get to, and it is easier to take the head off, than to strip off the fuel tank and everything, if you have to drill out the studs... You could have the head milled some to increase compression while you are at it..!! Mine is bored +.180, with 7:1 pistons...is every bit as powerful as my 520..( Maybe more)... Pulls one full gear higher than the other matching "B", in the field.. Was bored in 1960..!!

Ron, I am about to put new studs in my head for a new manifold. One end of the studs has more threads than the other. Which end goes into the head?? Thanks very much. Yes, I took my head to the shop and let them take out the old studs and do a complete valve job.

I would say I'd put the end with the least number of threads in the head.. Use Anti-Seze on the threads, and turn them in 'till they run out of threads.... The other end might go in to the bottom of the hole...you can have trouble getting a "Bottomed out" stud out...!!! Silicone one side of your valve cover gasket, so you can remove the valve cover to re-adjust your valves and not ruin a gasket...!! Re-condition the rocker arms where they contact the valve-stem--if they are worn, or you will have trouble setting them..you can use a file with them in a vise, or on a bench.. Heck, while you are at it, run a heater hose up the air-cleaner---to knock any mud-dauber nests loose---while you have the time...!!! A garden hose works well--but you will get water all over..!! Good luck, and enjoy that "B"...!!! Ron.

Great! I didnt know this could be done without taking the tank and everything else off. Your advice alone probably is gonna save me a bunch of work. Where can I get some of them harder valve seats, and new valves if needed? Local JD dealer? Thanks a lot! I appreciate it.

Glad to help....!

NAPA can install the hard seats, and should be able to get the valves... JD will have valves I am sure, if NAPA can't get them.. Any Good Engine Head shop should be able to install the seats...
