I have a chance to buy a JD 50 for $2,200. My plan is to restore this tractor. The engine turns over, tin work is ok ,it will need new grill screens, battery box, seat, manifold, and tires.Do you think this is a fair price? Tractor located in eastern Pa.

I paid $1000 for my 1955 50 series p/s tach w/f loader almost a year ago. It also came witha about $800 in extra parts - tires, seat, paint grille ,gaskets

Andy,
I know this is not a fair comparison. I bought my 1955 50 nearly ten years ago. I bought it at an antique tractor consignment auction. I paid $1000 for it, loader not included. It was running on 1 cylinder when auctioned. However, my son and I discovered prior to bidding was all it needed was a new distributor cap and plug wires. We had the opportunity start the tractors we were interested in 1 hour before the sale. Once started, he grabbed the distributor and wires and it took right off on 2. He was a crazy young kid at the time, and got a good jolt, but very smart with tractors. Once he let go, it was back to running on 1. This tractor was straight of the farm. Sheet metal was straight. 2 year old paint job. The only thing I've done since is re-line the clutch and brakes, cleaned the carb, and replaced the decals. It's had a leisure life till this fall. My sister used it to plow 20 acres of alfalfa sod with a 2-14 plow. Worked just fine.

Loren,

Good-looking 50, for sure. You got a good deal there, even at 10 year-ago dollars. Who's the driver?

Stan,
That be me. The clerk at that auction also commented that I stole that tractor. Said it was running fine when the farmer brought it in. The picture is not as clear as the original. The rear wheels appear to have some rust, but there is none. It has been a great tractor for plowing snow, moving boats, putting in docks etc. I now have the loader on my 60 (that my grandfather bought new in 1956). Sold the 50 to my sister last fall. She got a deal too. $1000. She married a great guy last spring who has a 40 acre hobby farm. She insisted on having a green tractor on the place, so I sold her the 50 when I bought the 60.

Wow!! Glad I didn't say anything about the need for repainting the sheet metal on the topside of the seat!! LOL

We never had a 50, but I sure wanted one back in '53 or '54.

Andy, I purchased my 1953 model 50 about a year and a half ago for $2400. Similar condition to yours except mine was running (albeit not well) and had just been painted. If your machine is running and there are no major issues with the transmission, PTO or Power-Trol lift then I'd say okay to $2200. If it's not running there are alot of things you can't check and I'd drop back to $1200 as my top price.

Best of luck. The 50 is a great little tractor.
John

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 1955 JOHN DEERE 50 THAT REQUIRE MANY OF THE SAME KINDS OF ATTENTION YOU MENTIONED.YOU WILL SPEND IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF $3,500 TO RESTORE THE TRACTOR TO SHOW QUALITY IF YOU DO MOST OF THE RESTORATION.GOOD LEARNING EXPERIENCE,NOT A PROFITABLE ADVENTURE.
