How big of a job is it to fix a PTO control lever that is disconnected internaly. Is it a major or minor undertaking. The control lever just moves like nothing is connected.
thanks
jim

Jim,

Clooney mentioned that there may be two levers that control the PTO in your 50. I've had my 50 for a little over a year now and until I actually got my hands on it I didn't realise how the PTO worked.

First, there were 2 kinds of PTO available on the model 50. The first kind was the old fashioned PTO that is driven off of the transmission. This kind requires you to have the transmission clutch engaged in order for the PTO to work. The second kind of PTO (like mine) is what is called a "live" PTO and it was introduced on the 40, 50, 60 and 70 tractors. The live PTO has a little lever to the right of the shifter. This lever engages the PTO system and must be moved when the engine is NOT running. If it does not want to move then you may need to crank the engine over while you pull on it (ignition switch off).

On the live PTO once the little lever next to the shifter is engaged, the lever next to the seat is used to control the PTO clutch. Pull it up to engage the PTO. This lever locks into position and will require a pretty good pull.

Hope this helps.
John (proud owner of a 1953 model 50)

The Dubuques had to wait for the 2nd year of the 420 and be equiped with the optional 5 speed and no direction reversor to get the live pto option.

Jim, there is no way of knowing. I depends on if your 50 has a live or ground speed PTO & what "control lever that is disconnected internally".. Are you talking about the front engagement lever by the shifter or the rear control lever [live PTO]?.. It would also depend on what's loose or disconnected inside..

About all you can do it tear into it, then you can make an informed evaluation of the problem..

Thanks for the reply. I haven't bought this 50 yet. I looked at it and found it to be sound but the owner called me later a told me the pto did not work. I do remember the control lever is to the right of the seat. Was wondering if a person with medium mechanical skills could tackle this kind of job?
thanks

Jim. it might be as simple as the front PTO in/out lever not engaged.. OR, it could be more serious like a broken PTO front drive gear or ?.. Most PTO repairs are simple enough that you can easily do them yourself but there is always the chance it could be complicated & the trans might have to partially come apart or reduction cover removed.. If it's clutch pack related or there is gear oil in the rear PTO unit it might be fairly expensive to repair..[you just never know]..

I guess if I were looking at that tractor I would try to figure out what the problem is.. If it can't easily be determined then I would drop the money amount offered to reflect the possible repair cost..
