G reverse high or low

I just put together the trans on my 52 G, and the reverse seems to work in high range and low range. I have never driven a G before and my A does not have a high range reverse, does the G have two reverses. Just wondering before i put the top on. Thanks Ken.

Clooney is correct. The "G" never had the high-reverse lockout.

Ken, the early A's had a pin on the reverse shifter to manually push the hi-lo shifter into low range when reverse was engaged. I believe the later 70's also had a similar set up to force the hi-lo shifter into lo range.. I don't think the G ever had that set-up. It's no big deal if you don't as a lot of those reverse pins were removed from the A's & later 70's so reverse could be engaged with the trans in either hi or low range.. It just makes it easier to shift into reverse & not have to put the hi-lo lever back into hi range again.. I usually pull those pins from my transmissions.. For any serious reverse work it requires the hi-lo shifter to manually be put in lo range but for a quick reverse to just back up a little the hi range reverse will work fine..

While not directly related, that G can be slowed down in all gears. The 1st reduction gear set from a 70 diesel should bolt right in. Both of our 70's can be shifted into "Race" low or high range.

I am really interested in slowing down my 1951 JD "G" for pulling. Can you give me some details about the 1st reduction gear set of a '70 Diesel?

The diesel runs at 1125rpm with the same ground speed as the spark ignition G/70 at 975 rpm. The 1st reduction gear set has a higher ratio in the diesel. It should bolt in. Mike Alward ( spelling and my lousy memory) figured the fix out long before I did.

I guess it's together right then, the 70 gears sound like a good idea, but a 70 diesel would probably be hard to find, i have never seen one down here in my neck of the woods, thanks again,Ken.
