I am doing a project on corn planters. I am most interested in the John deere 290 corn planters. I am having trouble finding out how many were manufactured. I was told that production years were 1941-1957 and that the new price was $275-300. Any information would be helpful.
Thanks,
Alex

The parts guy at a local JD dealer told me he started work there in 1976 or 77 (can't remember which) and that in 1977 they got a memo stating the 290 corn planters were being discontinued.

Found a little more info in Feb.1999 Green Mag. In 1956 liquid fert. attachments were added. You mentioned 1957, thats when Deere introduced the 4-row 494 & 495 and the 6-row 694 % 695. Deere advertized the tractor drawn planters daily capacity could check plant 290-30 acres/day and the 490-60 acres/day at 5mph.Also from the 1951 retail cat. the 290 could be adjusted for 30" to 42" rows and could be ordered with steel concave wheels with scrapers at same cost as rubber.Planters and disks were both manufactured at the Moline Planter Works.

July 1997 Green mag.has some history and a restored 290.It was the first 2-row manufactured by Deere that was designed & tested for use with a tractor. In production line 1941-1972.I have a 1951 retail price list- 2row wheels for rubber 267.50--- on rubber 323.85. 490-518.05 & 574.50 on rubber. Fertilizer attach- add 50.30for 290& 94.55 for 490.Also lists PowrTrol adapter& hose holder for 11.50 and Automatic Hill Drop Attachment for 2.00 for both planters. Tire size was 6:70x15 4plys & tubes. I have a complete 290 awaiting restoration, some day! Hope this helps ya!
