I am in the process of a pony overhaul and have a pretty rough flywheel ring gear. I was wondering if that ring gear can be removed and turned around to the good side.

I realize that the timing marks would need to be transfered to the flywheel, but other than that, would this work? I've seen that the price of a new one is $175. Ouch!

720Deere, I haven't ever flipped one on a pony but have rotated one about 90.. I guess you could easily pull your ring gear off the flywheel & see if it has a chamfer on the ring or flywheel that would prevent flipping it over.. If it looks the same on both sides you could then safely flip it.. You might have to grind a gear tooth lead on the new side for smooth starter engagement...

~Let us know how it works out if you flip it?

Thanks Clooney! I have never tried such a swap, but have heard of such being done on the main flywheel before. I figure it is worth a try as the old ring gear must come off anyway if it gets replaced. I would assume that supreme heat is in order to remove this beast? Maybe with some luck, it will come off in the press.

720Deere, it won't take a lot of heat, just enough to expand the ring to drive it of with a brass drift.. Putting it back on requires just enough heat to expand it to fall on with a light tap..
