wayne I have a 420 that no matter what gas cap i put on it it always leaks when the ground is rough. Ive tried one with a check valve and that worked until the old patches of epoxy started spraying gas like a lawn sprinkler. Cost me a day of taking off the tank and soldering in all the holes. Now I'm scared to put on another with a check valve. It appears from looking at the tank that is is suposed to have a collar that goes down inside the neck about 4 inches to hold off the fuel when it gets sloppy. My m and mt as well as my other 420 have this peice. I pulled the neck off when i solder up the holes and it did not appear to have ever had one. Could this have never had one and if so what would be the easy way to put a new one in. Then I guess I could be nuts and have a totaly cause of this issue. THanks for always answering my questions.

Andrew, I have had problems with gas sloshing past the gas cap. Usually you can make an extra gasket and add it to the old one to make the cap fit tighter. But the 420-430 tanks are supposed to have a vent tube. There should be a fitting on top of the tank, near the Hyd. lines with a small line that runs down beside the engine and is secured at one of the oil pan bolts.
Once you get the gas cap airtight to where it won't leak, this vent tube is necessary to keep gas flowing to the carb.
I once had a 420 that someone had put a 40 tank on it, I drilled and tapped a small hole in the top of the tank, and put a little JB Weld on the threads and installed the fitting. It worked fine and never leaked.
