I just picked up a 1954 John Deere R off of a friend. It is not running but in good shape overall. It has the 18-26 rear tires. From what I have read this would have been set up for rice field use? Are there any other things that it would have had that the normal R's wouldn't? Also, how many were made like this? Any help would be appreciated. I am really looking forward to getting it running! It is an awesome machine.

Hello Andrew,

If your R is a Rice tractor, it would also have some additional guards to keep mud out of the rear axle and brakes. Here is a photo of my 80, which uses the same guards:

I have highlighted the special rice parts. Over the brake is the AR992R Brake Cover. The half moon shape is the AR1217R Mud Shield, the round part attached to the hub is the R837R Mud Guard.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! You may be interested in a website I have helped some, at www.twocylinderdiesel.com
