My 2510 gas engine is needing an overhaul. It has the synchro transmission. A relative of mine is offering a good deal on a complete industrial 4 cylinder JD diesel engine with around 3500 hrs. on it, from an air compressor. It is mounted in the compressor trailer (to pull behind a vehicle). He took the numbers off of the side, and talked to a JD dealer. They informed him that the engine should fit in my tractor, the mounts should match. I went and looked at it today, however I forgot to get the numbers myself. It does look to be the same size externally pretty much, measured with a tape measure as well. Anyway it has a turbo, and he believes it to be 60 to 70hp. Will the radiator on my 2510 gas be big enough for an engine of that type? The radiator that the diesel engine has is too big to fit my tractor, and so is the fan. Also by the height of it with the turbo, it might require modification to the hood to make it fit, the air filter is larger than my 1855 Oliver's. Also don't know quite if the flywheel is going to match up right or not. Also don't know if I'm going to have problems getting on the shaft to the hydraulic pump, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? It would be greatly appreciated!

There is a small chance that I will look at the motor again tomorrow. If I do, I'll get the numbers, and I might get a picture or two.

alan, I have got a 2510 that I plan to repower in the near future. I have done many of these in the past. All the four cylinder 300 series Dubuque engines up until the PowerTech series will bolt right in your tractor as already stated, you will need to use the flywheel, rear housing and oil pan from your original engine. They will fit without modification. If your new engine is a long stroke engine (276 or 4.5) The oil pan will have to have a shallow pocket ground in the inside of it for the rear connecting rod bolt to clear. The #4 rod bolt on the long stoke engine will contact the pan. This is not a concern with the short stroke engines. Short stroke engine that will fit your tractor are: 202, 219, 239 and the 3.9. There are some 239 and 3.9 engine that have nonstructural blocks. Theses engine are for power unit applications and should not be put in a structural application like a farm tractor. The tractor uses the engine block for the frame and if one was to put a loader or front mounted equipment on it the non structural block is not the best candidate even though it will fit right in your tractor. If you get the code numbers off your diesel engine I can tell you which one you have. They are usually on a sticker on the valve cover. Good Luck, Dave W.

I have a 2510 with a 303 6 cylinder diesel engine, from a 95 combine,in it. When I installed the engine about 15 years ago, I pulled a four bottem 16 inch plow, plowing 120 acres for two or three years. I was worried about clutch and cooling, as I used the 2510 clutch, flywheel and radiator. I tried to use a little common sense when operating the tractor. I never have had any clutch trouble. The radiator has to be keep clean and the fan belt has to be kept tight, but it will keep the engine cool.

Your engine should be almost a direct bolt in deal. The compressor engine will probably have an SAE flywheel housing and an SAE flywheel. You will have to use the flywheel, flywheel housing and oil pan from the gas engine. May have to buy the right water pump. The hydraulic pump bracket holes will be in the compressor engine.

I don't think you will have trouble keeping the engine cool or clutch problems if you take a little care.
