I am looking at buying a 1966 4020 Diesel. It has a wide front end. I want to put my loader on it but I dont know if the front end is heavy enough. How can I tell if it is factory front or after market? Also any opinions on this tractor for a loader tractor would be appreciated. Any idea what it is worth. It is in fair condition.

Thanks,
Joe

The 4020 is a very good loader tractor . I have one with a JD 148 loader on it it is a short frame version of the 158 I have replaced the front end on mine with one from a 4440 But depending what you use it for I haul 2000# bale over frozen cow $$$t and broke some spindles on the 4020 frontend I do know a lot of people who have never broke one .

I appreciate all the information. It has helped me out a lot. My only concern is i am not sure it is a JD front end. I will have to go back and measure it. I did get some numbers off the front end that was casted in it. Can I tell anything from that? Numbers are R27820R. Thanks for any help.

Yes it is a JD frontend same number as the one I took off but don't let that bother you What would you be useing the loader for some dirt some gravel some hay it will hold up fine if your careful but frozen cow duty with 2000# bales is like loading it to capacity then driving over lots and lots of big rocks

Joe,
I have been using a 4020 with a GB loader on it for many years and have never broken anything on the front end. I handle a lot of round bales, some dirt and other stuff. My belief is that if you use common sense, the front axle is plenty good. My 4020 is a power shift and I think it is an excellent loader tractor. In line with what Clay said, a friend of mine recently bought a '72 4020 with a 148 loader and grapple fork, canopy, excellent rubber, 3 point for $12250. A few months ago I saw a 68 with a JD loader sell for $10000. Good luck.

Joe,
If you are looking at factory 4020D front end and you are planning on a loader with a 8 foot bucket or less, I would think there would be little question if the front end was strong enough. My 4020D front axle is about 4 in dia. there are some pics at Link I am currently looking for a loader for mine. I have seen 4020's go from 6500 for a 65, 9800 for a 67 and 13,200 for a 72 with a 156 loader on it.
