jons,

I am using a Pertronix kit on my model "A" and it works great, it rates 5/5 stars! The kit included the 'hall effect' switching module (replaces points) and a matched ignition coil for 12 volt neg (-) ground. This tractor is my snow moving outfit and I've never had it start so easily, especialy in cold weather.

Jons, I quickly looked at their website

Link

but didnt see any tractor or ag applications.

Genesee Electronics and Pertronix sell kits for JD Tractors, have you checked them out??

A solid state switching device replaces the old points and condensor and they are basiclaly the same, a magnetic induction or hall effect device or maybe an optic which turns coil current conduction on or off (what points did) but after that, differences in energy discharged across the plugs gap and spark duration time depends on the coil and maybe a more sophisticated control unit (like MSD) which may provide multiple spark discharges (MSD). I dont think a tractor application, where your not runnign 8 cylinders at 8000 RPM or more under extreme high compression and exotic fuels, needs MSD or Jacobs etc super ignitions such as race engines. Therefore, a more basic elec unit like a Genesee or Pertronix (with JD applications) will probalby serve the purpose. NOTE, to get the most bang for the buck if you use an elec switch, go the next step and couple it with one of their high performance high energy coils instead of using the old stock coil.

Post back or e mail [email protected] any questions. Let us know what you go with.
