I rewired my mt (all nice and pretty) ordered up new points, condenser, dist cap and dust cover. Put all in and started her up fired first time ran for a few minutes and died. had a weird sound to it almost a miss. THEN my father in law says did you put in points right. I put them in the same as the old one came out did i miss something. Some one told me to "index" the points what excatley does that mean. I'm prety good with a wrench but deadly with electrical. Thanks for the help.

Andrew

If a motor did that to me, the first thing I would check is if I got a bad condenser out of the box. I have done that once in the last half century and I had to wave down a pull back to the dock.

Indexing seems to me as I recall an ole hot rod term for making sure the points align perfectly when they make contact. I may be wrong on that one. When someone whoops something like that on me I put on my best cooter look and say "that sounds interesting, how do you do that."

Another thing to check on the Dubuques when they die mysteriously is to jump a wire from the post on the starter to the coil (Batt side) that will eliminate whether or not you have the grungy ignition switch problem.

Andrew, not sure what the term "index" means, but if it was running before you installed the new ones, the setting may have slipped. Turn the engine until the dist. cam is on the high side, holding the points open, then using a feeler gage, set them to .022 and make sure the hold-down screw is tight, also make sure the condenser screw is tight. This is a place to start, there could be other problems, post back if this don't work.
