I am a bit confused. Does anyone know for sure if my early 1935 "oil peg" J-D "A" should have the brass tag or the aluminum? Where is a good source for a new hood. Thanks, Alan

Alan, David Geyar in Ia has very good repo hoods, last known brass serial # tag was serial #424129 on the model A, last red head oil pressure gauge was serial # 424024. Bibbs

Hi "BIBBS", could you drop a bit more information on the fellow that does the hoods in Iowa, David Geyar? Does your term "RED HEAD" oil guage relect the same meaning as my term "OIL PEG"? Al

Al, Red head and oil peg are the same, a rod that comes out of the right rear corner of the gov to show oil pressure, rises about 1 to 1 1/2 inches when the tractor is running. Hoods--Dave Geyer 1251 Rohret Rd.SW, Oxford Ia.52322 ph. 319 628 4257, U/S A hood is $155.00 + shipping, there are cheeper hoods but not better hoods, I have bought hoods from Dave and you will be impressed with the quality and the fit. Feel free to email me direct. Bibbs

According to Wes Malcom, in his book "A Specialized Look into The Unstyled Model A", "A"s from 410000-411011 had the General Purpose style brass tags(GPA), from there to #424129 (early 1936), they were brass,"Model A Tractor" style. Later "A"s used an aluminum tag. I don't get into the brass vs aluminum controversy. If it's it's brass & the same with aluminum, as long as it's original,it's OK, & with the reference material now available it's pretty easy to determine the correct types.

37D, does the book you refer to specify serial number break for the "oil peg" to the pressure guage? I have never run across that book. Sounds like it could be very informative. Al

????? was alittle harsh with his answer but I do agree with him in that matter. It doesn't matter what kind of tag it is---just as long as it has one and it's readable. All these guys and auctioneers that have ads acting like a brass tag tractor should demand more money are nuts.

Does anyone reading this forum own or have access to a 1935 "A" J-D? I am not trying to figure where the big money is. I would guess if I were money driven, I surely would not invest in old tractors! You can spend "WAY" more than you ever can get out of them, even green J-D's. If you know different, would you share your ideas with the rest of us. Then we can all make big money on these green junkers we enjoy playing with. I would just like to know if I should use a "BRASS TAG" to be original.

Does your "oil peg" A use the early style GP brass tag or the Model A Brass Tag? Have you had any experience with a "Hysler" head? Al

I think the value with the brass tags has to do with the first 1,000 or so A's built. Those were the ones that carried tags stamped GP (GeneralPurpose). John Deere continued to use brass tags up to early 1936 production that read "Model A Tractor".

Who cares if it is alumunim or brass. A tag is a tag. Without one, it is not worth half. Sick and tired of all this brass tag bull sh#t.

Sounds like ????? is a little "backed-up". A little castor oil will free things up for him and put a smile back on his face and in his emails.

I don't understand your discomfort with a question regarding brass or aluminum as being proper for a particular year of J-D. Good information is what we all need.....unless I am missing something. I would hope that authenticity may have some value, especially if we spend much money rebuilding an early tractor. If it doesn't I should go over to the neighbors place and buy his "B" that has a VW engine in it...what a HOOT.

Thanks for the response, I am wondering if the "A" J-D was treated the same as the "B" that you refer to? I am still confused! Yes, my "A" is a true early 1935, has the oil pressure peg in place of the guage. I also have the "HYSLER" head, haven't ran the tractor yet, maybe this summer. Al

Old, it is an "A", not a B. And I don't know.
