I had hair this morning but after trying to figure out how to get the dang belts off this 420 7U I've pulled it all out. I'm a fairly good mechanic but this one's got me befuddled. The I&T manual doesn't say how and I can't find anything on any postings regarding this. Surely in 1958 JD didn't design a tractor that would cost a man a day of farming just to replace a belt. I have figured out the adjustment but how do you get the thing off????? My 40 has a slider that does it, but this is beyond me. HELP!!! thanks.

You did figure out how to loosen the pulley on the water pump, didn't you? Loosen the setscrew on the pump pulley and then unscrew the two halves. This loosens the belt enough to get it off the bottom pulley. Maybe, I don't understand the problem, but I have done this recently and had no problem. It might be the wrong size belt. The generator belt ajustment is obvious, so I assume your are having trouble with the water pump belt.

OK... yeah I did that but probably didn't get it unscrewed enough. After a point it wouldn't turn anymore and there isn't any way to hold the back half that I can figure. Probably just rusty. The belt is pretty loose though but I could'nt get my hand or any tool up under there to get it off the bottom pulley. Will try again in the a.m. Thanks a lot for your info though! denjoe

I replaced the one on my 430 last spring. I decided it was easier to take radiator off. Just not enough room in there with air cleaner, and shroud to work. Not that hard to take radiator off and in my case it needed cleaning anyway.

Denjoe, that 420 has a water pump, and belt replacement will not be like a 40. Loosen the set screw on the water pump pulley, then using a hammer and punch drive the front half loose, by placing the punch on the ledges provided, if you want, you can completely screw the front half of the pulley off, to replace the belt. Actually, it is eaiser to just screw it completely off, then the new belt will eaisly go on. Then tighten the new one up with the hammer and punch and tighten the set screw back.
