18 lead washers - 9 studs ---- Model D Head

The re-build [gasket] kit I got from JD has 18 lead washers in it. Since the head only has 9 studs [I counted twice], I assume that you place two washers under each nut, unless I've completely missed something here. Have I completely missed something?

Regards to all,
Jon

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

NOTE: There are also 9 studs mounting the Block to the case! I'd have to check but I think that they are the same size as the head studs - I wonder?!?!?!??!?!?

Clooney, good suggestion on removing the excess lead to keep fragments out of the oiling system.
Also good suggestion about removing the burrs. The nuts that came off the head studs have a beautifully milled or ground mating surface so we are good to go!

We have always put 2 washers on each stud. The parts book shows 18 used and the parts book index only shows the 264R washer used for that application. If your nuts have burrs on the back file them smooth or you will just tear the washers back out and not get a good seal. The stud mounting the block is supposed to use a lock washer but have seen the lead washers on them before. Just beware if you order them from Deere as you will probably get a box of 100 or more! We found this washer works well under the axle housing nuts to keep them from leaking oil. Especially on a D with high speed gears where as you have to have more oil in the transmission for the smaller gears to run in.

Jon, that is one of life's little mysteries..
~I have run into the same thing on the "D"..
~The parts manual says 18 used so I have always doubled them up without any problems.
~Actually it doesn't matter how many are used [within reason] as it will spit most of the lead out when the nut is tightened.
~Just make sure you remove all the extra lead pieces that squeeze out so it doesn't plug up your oiling system....

As far as I know, and what I use are one lead washer per stud.
