This may seem dumb but did all the 420/430 have only a hand clutch? How many hp? Are these good units?

HI, in response to your question....no, they all didn't have hand clutches. Mine is a 420 and it has a foot clutch..... ..thank you.

Ken, the L, M, 40, 420, and 430 were all foot clutch. They also all had a vertical 2-cylinder engine. As to horsepower, here is a paste from another site. Since the 420 and 430 used the same engine, the horsepower ratings are the same.

The 420 and 430 used different blocks,HP might
be the same but the engines were different.All
you have to do is look at the dip stick on the
left side of a 420 block and the oil fill on top of the valve cover to see the difference.
The 430 block has the dip stick and oil fill
on the right side of the block.

The last few 420's snuck out the factory door with 430 blocks.

These all had a foot clutch. They have a conventional automotive type drivetrain with the engine mounted front to back rather than side to side. The M, 40, 420, 430, & 440 two cylinder tractors were call "Dubuque" tractors because they were made in Dubuque rather than Waterloo. They all had foot clutch and two cylinder vertical engines. They 420/430 tractors had about 29HP at the PTO. "Are they good units?" I think so and so does Wayne in Tenn. and many others. They are very usable. Some of the desirable features on the late 420 and all 430 are power steering, live PTO, 5 speed transmission, & directional reverser. They came in many confirurations and depending on what you are going to do with it, some are better suited than others. I have a 420U (utility) and a 420C (crawler). The utility is longer and lower than a standard or rowcrop which makes it nice to put a loader on.

Ken, all the 420-430 wheel tractors have a foot clutch. Horsepower is around 30. Don't have my book handy to tell you exact. They are my favorites, but do have some common problems such as leaky rockshafts and hydraulics, worn steering, gear noise in the transmission. But overall a very tough little tractor with all the modern comforts available, such as live pto, power steering, floatride seat, foot clutch, a modern type 3-point hitch, and still a 2 cyl.

Hi, we bought a JD 420U new when they first came on the market in 1956 for $2100. PTO HP was around 30. It was a great tractor but one fault was the gear ratio between 1st and 2nd gears. 1st was really slow and was to slow for baling/chopping but 2nd was to fast for baling/chopping. Also live PTO was not available in 1956, but by the end of the 420 production when the 430 was released there was a 5 speed transmission and live PTO. Great tractor to start in -30F weather.

You say you bailed and chopped with a 420, how well did the PTO hold up. A local dealer here, quite familiar with 420's said alot of them puke the shaft when used on a brush hog, baler, etc. Looking to buy one and that's stopping me. I understand the 430 has more beef in that area?
