Wico X Magneto ?

I installed a Wico X Magneto on the B. I have added a two prong switch to the Magneto for grounding the magneto to shut off the tractor. Will letting the switch in the shut-off position (grounding the magneto)cause any harm to the magneto when the tractor is parked for the night?

We used various modified Wico magnetos on race cars for years. We preferred using a toggle switch to ground the magneto rather than a momentary push switch as it was a more positive device.

We never had any problems with the magneto caused by this.

Now that you have a wire to the contact points in the magneto, you might want to try adding and external coil 6 or 12 volt if you have electrics on the B? Then you'll have a battery ignition and will start real easy. I did this to an H where the internal coil in the mag. would get an open when it heated up. Just get a 2 pole coil and attach that wire going to your switch to the + side of the coil and off the - side take the rest of the wire from the switch and attach it here. Then either feed your voltage from the tractor or a battery to the switch to feed power to the coil. Now take the coil high voltage wire out of the mag. upper internal coil lead and put into, make longer, the new external coil. Then I plugged the upper coil hole with a short piece of high tension wire. Now viola you have a battery ignition but without any secondary advance as later battery distributors had. But not to worry, you can add some initial advance. NOTE: don't forget to turn this switch off when you do that or you'll drain the battery through the points if they are closed and probably burn up the points. If you have 12 volts on the "B", you may have to add a ballast resistor to drop the voltage to about 9 if the points turn blue from too much voltage. This is what was done in automobiles when they went to 12 volts.

As always I like Clooney's safety comment, the nice thing about NATPA is you are required to have a emergency kill switch so the sled operator can kill your tractor in case of a emergency.
That said a break a way switch (from a trailer sales) works really good, as you can pull the break a way key and put it in your pocket, same as a on dash key switch.
Just another thought if you intend to do any tractor pulling you would be all set up. Had a guy turn the flywheel on my GP once just to see how hard it turned and it started right up, could have been a very bad situation if I had left it in gear.
Just my 2 cents here on the safety part.
Bob

I like your idea; that wouuld indeed be a good safety measure for any tractor that we keep around the school. Could you please post a picture of where you mounted the switch? Thanks, jp

Good Morning B man. It wont hurt anything to leave that kill switch, on as theres no energy being developed when the mag is not rotating (no current flow through the points or coil circuit) and its the same as the points being shorted to ground which they are when closed anyway. Although many original ones had that momentary normally open push to kill switch, youre fine usign the type switch you asked about.

Post back or e mail [email protected] or call 812-824-4608 with any questions.

Good Luck n God Bless

46 B, absolutely no harm....As a matter of fact it is a good safety measure so the tractor won't start if someone turns the flywheel.
~Leaving that switch in the shut-off position just shorts the points to ground. That is no different than shutting the tractor off [stalling it] with the points in the closed position...
