Tore down the 60 tonight to get to the bad fan bearing, which leads me to a couple of questions.

1. The roller air pump on the fan shaft, what exactly is it there for? and is there anything that goes wrong with them. Dad is worried about it so by default so am I.

2. The return water line does it have rubber ring seals top and bottom of the metal pipe. Our book isn't really clear on this and I would like to be sure that is what I am dealing with prior to making a mess.

3. Since the steering gear is bone dry what is the best thing to put in it. There is dried grease in it now. Our JD40 calls for 90W in the steering box. The 60 book calls for hypoid which I take to be gear oil but Dad thinks this should be some sort of grease.

Thanks all.

This is a positive crankcase ventilation pump. It pumps clean air into the crankcaser and pushes vapors out into the air induction (at least the "A" models did, the '60' might just push it to the air). It's a double roller pump. About all you can do to check it is to make sure there is no chafing on either pump face. If there is, the pump is galling and may tie up soon. If all the clearances are up to spec, there shouldn't be a problem. Lots of them run without trouble ever.

Yes, there are two o-rings used. Buy some extras so if you cut or more during instalation, you won't have to drive back to town. It can be an instersting experience. Probably one of the toughest jobs I've ever had to do on an old Deere. Some folks have them slip right on, but I had to use shims to help guide and protect the o-rings.

I take it this is a manual steer tractor. most folks like to use JD Cornhead grease. Other mix grease with gear lube to make a pourable mix that is tacky, yet flowable. Any lube is good, but something too thin will lilely end up on the gorund. It might be dry because you have bad seals at the bottom of the pedestal. Not a fun job of you have a one piece pedestal.

Toughest job I ever had fixing up an old popper is putting the grill screen in on my 830. It will try your patients big time!
