Andy, if you have the 24 volts, which is the series sum of two 12 volt batteries in series (or 4 sixes), but no 12 volts, theres a darn good chance you dont have their center tie point (where the 2 batteries join in the middle) bonded to frame ground. You asked how to get 12 volts, since both should be tied to ground in the center where they join, its 12 volts from either outermost untied post to frame ground, same as on a regular single battery 12 volt system would be as it also has one battery post tied to frame ground. Its just that one is POS grounded while the other is NEG grounded, but its still 12 volts from either (outermost untied posts) remaining post to frame ground. The 2 outermost remainign untied posts are what feeds the A and B circuits up to the switch, one 12 volts pos ground the other 12 volts neg ground, which balances the lighting loads. The big cables lead to the starter solenoid and generator and feed the A and B 12 volt light switch circuits. The starter and generator are both 2 wire 24 volt isolated from ground devices which feed off the outermost ungrounded battery posts, + on one battery and - on the other making up the 24 volts. Its only the starter and generator that are 2 wire 24 volt isolated from ground devices, the lights are 12 volts and fed from ground and one of the A or B 12 volt circuits from the switch. I sure hope this heps explain the system and answers your question. Post back or e mail me at [email protected] any questions PLUS e mail me if you want a wirign diagram. WTW (Dave Wickman) is the go to guy on those 24 volt systems, if you do a search he posted a nice long article on their operation somewhere. Good Luck n God Bless ya Andy John T Nordhoff
