I am thinking about purchasing either a 3010 or 3020 for some light all around usage (raking hay, bush hogging,...) was wondering about fuel useage diesel vs. gas any ideas?? Also how many hrs. is a lot of hrs. on a gas tractor? Thanks in advance

I don't know how the diesel is for fuel usage, but I have a 3020 gas that I use for just about everything. This spring, pulling a 10 ft transport disc, I went through 50 gal of gas in about 12 hrs. (a little over 4gal/hr) As far as hours on the tractor, I'd agree with Joe's post, that it depends on how hard the tractor was worked/maintained. Mine has 6200 hrs on it and has never been rebuilt.(and still runs great) The first owner only used it for light duty stuff, and I only have 40 acres, so it has had a fairly easy life. Hope this helps.

The diesel will be more fuel efficient and would be better for tough work - plowing, discing, etc. For what you mentioned, and for easier starting in winter, the gasser will work fine and cost you less up front. Hours are very relative on a tractor; light work and good care will make a high hour tractor a better buy than a lower hour, hard worked or unmaintained one. I would not look too hard at the hours but rather at the little things that indicate if it was well taken care of.

My brother has both 3010 and 4020 gas. I never thought either was that bad on gas, but they don't get worked that hard. 3300 combine with 219(?) seems to take more than either of the tractors. Then again I think look at them as I do my auto mileage, when the tank is empty, I have to fill it. Around here I would guess most diesel pickups never reach the break-even point, i.e. the added cost of the diesel always exceeds the added cost of gasoline. I'm not sure of the make but I think VW is coming out with a new car (choice of diesel or gas). The price difference, $10,000, will pay for all of the gas used by the gasser for 100,000 mi. I.E. the pay-back is something in excess of 200,000 mi without interest, or NEVER! My choice would be the one that is in the best shape, or if equal the 3020.

My 4020 diesel under load uses approx 25gal in 7-8hrs/ 3gal hr. My 7700 combine has the 4020 gas engine in it and uses approx 50gal in 7-8hrs/ 6gal hr. I'm guessing the 3020 would be the same only in a smaller way.
