Ive got a tired 4010 diesel that i would like to get a minimum of 150 hp out of. Ive checked into a complete eng. rebuild including pump and turbo,
kind of expensive! Ive herd rumor of putting a 466
cu.in. in it out of a combine.
Does any one know if this can be done and what if anything has to be changed to make it happen.

Any info would be appreciated Thanks Kent

theres a JD shop in NW Iowa (sheldon I think) that does this, but they install a naturally aspirated 466 and turn the pump down to 100 hp. All you have to do is change the frame rails, and they bolt in. If you want 150 horse though I'd say to find a different tractor cause from the clutch back isn't gonna take that much horse. Some of the turboed ones at 120 have trouble. Maybe something like a 4620 or so.

It's not going to be a direct bolt-in, but it can be done without a lot of trouble, providing you can "field modify" things to work. The hood will definitely have to be modified to clear the turbo and so forth, and the intake system will take some work. You'll also have to install a manual shut-off cable, etc. What do you plan to use the tractor for? If you're going to be pulling it hard, don't expect the transmission and other drivetrain components to like it much. Those components were designed to live with around 90 horsepower, not 150+. There are a lot of turboed 4010s out there running in the 120 hp neighborhood and maybe more, but those engines don't have near the low-end torque and grunt that a 466 has. Everything is going to have to be in top shape to survive under high loads. As far as expense goes, they don't give away good 466s. You can probably expect to pay as much for a decent 466 as it would cost to overhaul your current engine, and there's no guarantee that after you go to all the trouble to install it, that it won't fail in a few hundred hours or need major work. If you're looking into an early 466 with the cam-driven oil pump, it's well worth checking the condition of the oil pump gear and corresponding gear on the cam, as they're known to wear on high-hour engines that have endured a lot of cold starts. If that gear fails, you lose all oil pressure instantly, and #4 rod bearing will fail and spin in seconds. I'd like to someday repower a late 4020 with a 466, so you're not the only one toying with the notion.

Kent, I saw an article in Farm Show a few years ago where this company in Michigan?? I believe, would repower any 404 tractor with a 466. They had pictures of some of their work, very little alterations to the body to make it work. I don't have the article anymore but do a search on google mabe? MK
