I have a mt had for about a year. When purchased the ign. switch was by passed and to start and run the tractor there was an alligator clip with a wire on the starter(tractor ran fine) about 3 weeks ago got hard to start, usually caught on second go round, now no fire, have gas, i totaly rewired the whole tractor(minus lights) used a wiring diagram that i think wayneintenn had posted. now i get squat. pulled the coil off my m and tried it not the problem checked voltages relative to the m which starts and runs fine where do I go next would like to have the old gal running ive got the cultivators and need to use it for fall garden.

I have an MC crawler, same engine as MT. It was a hard starter and was sensitive to moisture like rain. Put a shield over the distributor and solved that. But!
Go through the checking for fire at the plugs.
1 see that you have voltage at the coil.
2 see that you have voltage through the coil at the distributor.
3 take the wire off the distributor and see if you get a spark when you touch it to ground. 4 If the above are OK, then the points are at fault, usually oxidized and either replace or file them off.

did you check the points? i had a similar problem on my 40U. everything was wired up correctly and it turned over easily, but it wouldn't fire. i adjusted the points, and thought they looked fine, but i didn't get a spark. i then took some 400 grit sandpaper and cleaned the points, and she fired right up.

i replaced the fuse when i re-wired but i haven't checked it since i tried to start it again. what size fuse should it have I think I put a 10A in. As for the blue spark i removed the plug and placed it to the block and turned it over I didnt see a blue spark. THanks for the help.

PS - IF Wayne-in-TN gave you a wiring diagram, then your wiring diagram is right. Try upgrading the fuse and see what happens...

Andrew,

If you did not see a blue spark, then you are not even getting fire to ignite the gas.

First of all, you need a 20amp fuse. However, you need to make sure you have a reliable and accurate wiring diagram...if you post your e-mail, I will send you an updated color-coded one that CLooney put together.

In the meantime, try jump starting it like you did before. If you are not get anything from that standpoint, you may have a problem in your distributor, that is, if the wiring is correct, and you replace the 10amp with a 20amp fuse.

Keep us posted,
tom

Andrew,

Dan may have you covered...if it is not the fuse, post back and let us know. You can get/find a used ign. switch and we can get you fixed-up so you can toss the aligator clip...your choice.

Did you check to see if the battery is toast or not???Or, is she turning-over but not starting?

Are you sure that all the wiring is correct and that you have good grounds and that nothing is grounding out?

If she is turning over but not starting, are you getting a blue spark on your plug(s)??

Post back with answers....

tom

There is a fuse in line I believe from starter to ignition, located behind dash on lh side and you should be able to get to it by opening battery door. On my MT that blows periodically, usually about 1 time per year, and tractor won't start.
