I rolled her out of the garage tonight and fired her up for the first time, ran for a little over 1 minute, died and wont restart. Mag, starter and carb were rebuilt, new plugs and wire. #1 plug had a little carbon on it but dry, #2 was wet and looked as if it never fired. #1 compression is good but #2 is weak but improving. there was gas on the ground from #1 petcock but not from #2. Also seems to be backfiring a little. What should the gap be set at for the plugs? What is your opinion on my problem or series of problems. Thanks in advance. KS

KS, the first thing [& most common] is to make sure you have the 3-way fuel valve turned to the correct location & the fuel turned on. ~If that is ok then place a short pan under the carb & open the carb drain & see if you have a good pencil sized stream of fuel flow for at least 30 seconds [or on that D until you fill the pan up]. If you don't have any [or not very much] fuel flow you have probably found the problem so start with the fuel line at the carb & work your way to the tank & see where the stoppage is [again verify you have the 3-way valve opened correctly].
~If you have a good fuel flow per above, install a new set of spark plugs [another very common problem on those old Ds]. Then hook the new plugs to the plug wires & lay on the block & crank the engine,,, You need to see a bluish spark jump those plug gaps MULTIPLE times in a row,, if not let us know what type of mag [or distributor] you are running.
~To answer your question on plug gapThe Deere spec is .030 but I always set then to at least .035 & even .040 if it will fire them that wide under load
