Didn't get any replies to my problem with switching a battery backwards in a JD 51A. Am wondering how to correct the problem. When I changed batteries, I accidently put positive to positive. Worked for a year, now doesn't. How should I correct the problem and did I burn anything out?

Thanks Clooney, and no, I didn't get your first response. You guys are fabulous. The local JD dealer isn't much help. They'd rather sell me a $100,000 replacement.

Nick, well then, changing to Delco distributor is a piece of cake [just follow the post below].
~You do have another option & that's to use an external coil with your existing Wico distributor then use the Wico points & Delco condenser to go with the external coil. That set-up while not looking exactly original does function good..

Sorry Nick, put this post in the wrong box. It's meant for Steve...That's what I get for typing while I'm driving...JDC

Nick, seeing as it worked when you installed the batteries backwards then quit after a while you probably did burn the regulator points [some regulators are polarity sensitive].

~Try switching the batteries back to positive ground, then re-polarizing the generator… To do that... First ground the generator's [F] post [smaller of the two] to the generator’s frame, then jump battery power from the regulator's [BAT] terminal to the generators [A] post, you should see a spark, if so you then have it polarized.

~Then run the tractor, if it then charges correctly you are probably good to go [be sure the ammeter reads correctly].

~If it still doesn’t charge, run the tractor at fast idle, then short the generators [F] post to ground, if it charges then you have bad regulator, or bad regulator ground, or open wire from the regulator’s [F] terminal to the generator’s [F] post,,,, If still no charge leave the [F] post grounded & jump a wire from the regulator’s [BAT] terminal to the generators [A] post, if it charges then you have a bad regulator, or open in the wire from the regulators [Arm] terminal to the generators [A] post.

~If still no charge, MAKE SURE you have battery voltage at the regulator’s [BAT] terminal with the tractor not running [that’s a must for it to charge].

~If still no charge you probably have a bad generator.,.. To test the generator,,, first remove the generator belt, then use a jumper wire & short the [F] post to ground, then run battery voltage from either the battery or regulator’s [BAT] terminal to the generator’s [A] post. The generator should motor slowly, then remove the [F] post ground wire, the generator should then pick up speed…If the generator doesn’t motor at all you probably have a bad armature, or dirty commutator, or stuck brushes, or internal broken wire… If it motors but doesn’t speed up when the [F] post un-grounded then slow down when the [F] post is re-grounded you probably have a bad [open] generator field, or stuck field brush, or open wire in the field circuit….

I sent you an E-Mail on your other [earlier] post, apparently you didn’t get it?

seems like the only thing you could burn out is your regulator....
