I have a john deere 50 that has been sitting a few years. We cleaned the carburetor and replaced gaskets in the carb. It will start and run but only if the choke is pulled all the way on. I would appreciate any help

valves may have some leakage, they arent creating a vacuum when the cylinder is on the intake stroke.

as a matter of fact am cleaning a DLTX 99 again. It worked fairly good but required a little too much choking....I used the high power soaking cleaner and placed the carb in proper size container and am bubbling air into bucket to create some churning. Used my regulated air, activated a blowing noze to obtain the proper amount. Looking like its cleaning good...you need to pull the small plugs out of the side of the carb and you'll need to get new ones, also you need to run wires and cleaning the passages good....what people don't seem to realize is that most low speed operation is on the idle passages....

Dale, as Chuck said you didn't get all the passages clean inside that DLTX carb…

~Start by pulling the load nozzles & cleaning all the air bleed holes in the sides of them. If those holes are plugged you might just have found your problem [& gotten very lucky]… If those load nozzle holes are open then you probably have plugged 1st, 2nd, or 3rd idle orifice holes. Those are very difficult to clean in that carb. Pull the throttle plates & try to work a SOFT wire into the idle orifice holes. Between the use of soft wire & plenty of carb clean with some compressed air you MIGHT get those holes & small passages cleaned out. If not, or it is full of rust inside you will have to pull the idle passage end ball plugs & that isn't an easy task…. JDClooney@aol.com

the idle passages as blocked....did you remove the main jets and plugs on side of the carb and clean out all the passages. They are hard to get clean, I use small wire. The pros pull the hardened plugs at the rear and use long drill bits. I've found that the Berryman cleaner/soaker from Autozone seems to work the best on these items. I soak for a couple of days then spend a lot of time on the ports.
