Dad got a 60 the other day that had been sitting out for a while. Runs fine but is stiff all over. The main issue right now is the brakes. Left side seems ok other than the pedal is a little slow returning. The right side however goes to the floor, so we adjusted it some and now we have brakes on that side but we have a sight musical ring to it as we move. Which now brings me to my question since we don't have the service manual yet (on order though) what is the secret to removing the brake drum?

Also, noticed that the power trol is low on fluid can I put hy-tran in it?

Have you greased the shaft? There is a grease fitting on the brake assembly.

I don't have my manual in front of me, but you should be able to remove the drum with a brass or aluminum drift after backing the center nut off the brake shaft. You will probably have to back off the adjustment screw to give the drum room to come off. If it's stubborn, back the nut so it's flush with the end of the shaft (protect the threads), have a helper lever the edge of the drum while you bump the end of the shaft with a 2 or 3 pound hammer. You probably wont need to, but you can remove the complete brake assembly after backing out the three screws holding the mounting flange to the main case. Don't breath the dust inside the drum as it may be laden with asbestos from the old pads.

I use SAE 20 or 30 motor oil in my Power Trols.

Zane,

How can you tell if the brakes had asbestos in them? Are there any part numbers etc?

Thanks. Ended up having to take it off to work on it. It sure was stubborn. Now all we need is some brake lining and we can put it back together.
