'47 A Surges at idle, won't idle slow

My '47 A won't idle without surging. I have checked all passageways in the carb, they are clear. I have checked the float level and done a leak test on the float bowl, all okay and adjusted to specs. I don't see any shoulder on the needle valves, and while I can get a pretty good idle out of it, it still surges some. Any ideas what to do next? Thanks, Allanj

Thanks, D and D, rechecked all the passage ways, reinstalled the carb, and, wonder of wonders, it idles right down. Thanks for your help - Allanj

Allanj,
I agree with David's suggestions, but one other possibility is a governor problem. To check this, remove the cotter pins from the rod which connects the governor to the carb, and remove the rod from the carb butterfly. Start the tractor and hold the carb butterfly with one hand and the governor rod which you disconnected from the carb with the other. Control the engine speed manually by moving the carb butterfly, and feel the response of the governor. If the rod moves smoothly back and forth as the engine speed changes, your governor is probably ok and the idle passages in the carb should be looked at in more detail.

Your symptoms can result from blocked idle passages, which requires the engine to obtain fuel from the load circuit. The only way it can do this is through the load nozzle - as the engine slows down the vacuum increases, finally enough to "gulp" a charge of fuel through the nozzle - it speeds up until the charge is burned, then the cycle repeats itself. Normally at idle the fuel to operate on comes through the idle circuit.

My guess would be clean the passages again. Make sure the passage sometimes called the secret passage is clean. Make certian you are drilling ALL the way through it and not hitting solid rust--thus thinking you are all the way through. Good luck Dave NE Iowa
