I bought a 1010 JD a few months ago. The battery wont keep a charge. When I was taking the battery out of the tractor I noticed that the ground cable on the battery was connected to the (-) post on the battery. I thought that 1010's had a positive ground but I am not for sure? Also any ideas on the charging? The amp. gauge never moves? How can I check to see if the generator is charging?
Thanks guys.

If the amp gauge never moves I would say you have a problem. Your question above about polarizing it is a legitimate possibility or you could just need a voltage regulator. Likely you could fool with the regulator and make it work if you knew what you were doing but unless you do you should probably just spring for a new one. Take the generator and the voltage regulator off and carry them in to an automotive electric shop and they can test both for you.
