shorter muffler?

I asked this question about a month ago, and didn't really get any good suggestions. I have a 620 john deere with the oval shaped muffler. It has to fit into a 7 foot garage door. I cut as much off the top as I could and it still rubs going in and out the door, I need it to be about 2 inches shorter to feel comfortable. All the muffler I find are all the same size. And it has a 4 bolt flange that holds it on, so I can't just get a shorter car muffler or anything. Does ANYONE make a shorter muffler for these tractors? Am I the only person who stores there tractor in a garage? Thanks for any help you can provide. Andrew R.

Andrew, The round muffler base is the same as the oval muffler base. A few years ago I bought a 60 that had a loader on it and the previous owner had a clearance problem and the muffler was bent back near the base. I cut it off through the factory weld, cut out the bent area (about 6 inches) and rewelded it. It made a neat factory appearing shorty that fit in the barn. Many people wanted to know where I got it because they had door clearance problem as you have. Easy cheap fix.

Andrew,

Thank you asking the question. I also have the same problem with my 60. I did that same as you, took and oval muffler and cut the top off. I barely clears with the loader on. Loader off, won't clear. We got some good input here for suggestions. Going to check them all out. And someone else mentioned earlier, two tractors in the garage. My van outside, among other things. Only car that gets a garage in my wife new VW convertible.

P.S. Thanks to all for your input !!!!!

STANLEY MUFFLER CO. makes a round muffler with the four bolt flange that is about 4 in shorter. It is for a 60, 620, 630, & I think a G. My 630 (and also 60) can go in & out garage door with the stanleys. It's my muffler of choice because it doesn't have a baffle. It has a bit nicer sound than the longer tinnyer black JD muffler. Tractor supply can order the stanley muffler-about $22. Only a couple dollars more than the taller, lighter, tinny one. Oval from TS is around $34.

Andrew- Would you please post again if you find a shorter muffler to fit? I have the same problem with my 60. And I know from sad experience that it doesn't take too much of a shove on the muffler to break the casting that supports it!

Andrew, if you can get in and out of your garage now, maybe just let a little air out of the front tires? Just a little will make a difference.

Maybe you would want to put the orchard muffler on it, and run the exhaust under the back...?? Otherwise, I'd just take the muffler OFF...!! OR...get a nice Chrome Stack, and cut it any length you want...!!!

i cut it as short as I could cut it, and it's about 20 inches long now. It needs to be about 18 or 19 inches long. That's from the bottom of the flange, to the highest part. Thanks again for everyone's help. Andrew R.

Andrew, give K & K tractor a call [ 317-398-9883] He has the short muffler for the unstyled A.. It might work on your 620 as it's a 4 bolt flange,, I believe that short muffler is 15" tall.. If you need to know for sure I have one on my A & can measure it for you...

~In a lot of cases you can also gain some garage door clearance by propping your garage door open a little farther with a pole.

Andrew, You don't say what the maxinum height muffler you can use. The muffler for the late styled A will fit your 620. So will the 630 muffler. If you order the one for the A make sure they have it in 22" and not the 24" that a lot of people are selling for the A these days. It will have the dent in it but that won't hurt anything. If that is still to long I don't know what to tell you as those two are the shortest stock muffelers I know of. You might try CORRECT CONNECTION for the A muffler. ( 814-926-2777 or e-mail= [email protected] ) I am not sure they have them but they could tell you where you might get one.

The 630 and the A muffler are both 22". The 630 top could be cut off about 2-3" without hurting anything. That would get you down to 19-20".

Andrew, I could be wrong but think a muffler off of an AR would bolt right on there amd they are shorter. It wont be oval but at least you dont have to worry about it hitting. I have the same problem with a 50 and was gonna put a muffler off of a BR on it. let me know how it works out.
