I have seen previous posts about two cylinder diesels "slobbering" out the exhaust. One of the factors involved in this always seems to be temperature. I have the same problem with my 1957 720D and I have replaced the thermostat (which was stuck open) to no avail. It still only seems to heat up to about 170. Even with a towel covering 95% of the grill screens, still only 170.
What could be causing this lack of temperature? I am reasonable sure that the temp gauge is not that far off, but I need to stick a thermometer in the radiator to be sure. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

720Deere, that isn't unusual on a non working 2-cylinder diesel. Remember a diesel has no throttle plate so it takes in massive amounts of cold air then adds just enough fuel to keep the RPM's at the throttle set point. Lots of cold air & very little fuel adds up to not much engine heat....Put it to work & it will add more fuel & that should bring the temperature right up..

Thanks, Clooney! The tractor is mainly used for antique tractor pulling and doesn't get much of a workout on a regular basis. I hope to pull wagons for some neighbors filling silo soon. Maybe even run a hammermill a little. Maybe a little work will make the old girl happier!

720D:

If you get it on the silo blower for a while, that would do it loads of good. Working like that is like putting it on a dyno for a day. Of course if you're going to be pulling twin-axle chopper wagons half-filled with corn silage, she'll honk a bit, too.
