Someone recently posted a negative remark about I&T manuals. I searched quickly but couldn't find their comment to quote here. I just wanted to comment for anyone considering buying these manuals. I have found their JD-4 manual very useful. I couldn't locate a proper "shop manual" for my recently aquired "D". All I could find was this I&T publication. It is not a complete shop manual, but it has been a very valuable reference. It's a lot better than nothing, and anyone with basic mechanics skills can do a lot with the help of this reference.
I am not connected with I&T in any way and have nothing to gain personally from speaking positively about this manual.

Regards to all,
Jon

Get the manuals from John Deere. IT manuals are vague, in-accurate, and miss some of the more important items. Deere knows more about what they built. Their manuals are as accurate as any manuals from any company. You will only need to buy them one time. So buy the best, and leave the I T manuals at Tractor Supply.

The IT manuals are excellent and worth the price. Haven't put a stain on the furniture since we found a use for them as beverage coasters.

Well, I'm not a expert mechanic, and the IT manuals leave me without some very important information. My vote - fair to poor!

I like the I&T manuels but as mentioned below, they are not nearly as complete as manufacture manuels. They tend to cover a wide variety of tractor models so are not very specific to any one. They do at least give settings and torque specs for each. I would agree that they don't give a detailed account of "put tab A in slot B" and if you don't have some mechanical knowledge you probably wouldn't want to take on a full overhaul with an I&T manuel, then again you probably wouldn't want to do it with any manuel. I recently purchased an I&T manuel that covers my JD 430, it also covers most all of the 20 and 30 series. It was around $25. Have seen manuels for the $430 reprints from Deere ones for $100 plus. Most of the old Deeres are pretty easy to work on. If I were working on a new generation think I would want the Deere manuel.

I have almost every major brand of tractor produced in the 40's-60's, and have IT manuals for them. I think they are quite helpful both with their written description and photos.

I love them. Concise and to the point. They are written for the person that already has some experience and general background information. No fluff, just hard data. I've been doing mechanical work for 40 years and sometimes lose patience with original factory shop manuals because they have too much detail and "what is a screwdriver" type information. One of my favorite statements found in the IT manuals is "assembly is self-evident." To paraphrase; "if you can't figure this out you shouldn't have a tool in your hand buddy." On the other hand, sometimes detailed and esoteric information, e.g. diesel injection pump repair, might only be found in original factory shop manuals. IT used to publish "Standard Units" manuals which are great. They gave specs. for, and covered repairs of most makes of starter motors, generators, magnetos, distributors, clutches, etc. I do miss the days when IT manuals sold for three dollars apiece, but oh well. Another comment on aftermarket manuals, in general. Go out and buy a damn Chiltons for an auto now adays and try to find detailed information. Most of the times when I need detailed information I find a statement e.g. "disassembly not suggested" or "bring to a dealer." Useless crap.

I think most people would agree that the I & T manuals are not "worthless". They provide good basic information in most areas, but are usually not as complete as the John Deere manuals.
