TESTED SEPT 18 to SEPT 22 1956 serial# 7200022 TEST LASTED 45 1/2 hours. MAX HP 56.66. fuel used 3.153 gal per hr. MAX TORQUE @ 65% rpm @ 116% HP-HR per gal was 17.97 (how much HP a tractor could get out of a gal of fuel in 1 hr.) Part throttle below means that the 720 had wheel slip more then 16% and it was trottled back till slip went below 16%. (So that the engine would lug to rated 1125 RPM's and have wheel slip below 16%) 1st Gear: HP 20.83, LBS pulled 6547#, speed 1.19 MPH, wheel slip 16.3% (PART TROTTLE) 2nd Gear: HP 33.91, LBS pulled 6442#, speed 1.97 MPH, wheel slip 14.23% (PART TROTTLE) 3th Gear: HP 48.44, LBS pulled 5633#, speed 3.23 MPH, wheel slip 10.97% 4th Gear: HP 51.66, LBS pulled 4644#, speed 4.17 MPH, wheel slip 7.85% 5th Gear: HP 50.24, LBS pulled 3405%, speed 5.53 MPH, wheel slip 5.26% 6th gear: HP 47.58, LBS pulled 1589#, speed 11.23 MPH, wheel slip 2.23% ABOVE TESTS were with 15.5 X 38 tires and the tractor weighted 9241# 669# of liquid ballast in each tire, no cast weigths. (7020# on the rear end and 2046# on the front end.)

Tractor was also tested with 13.6 tires and no added weight. Tractor weighted 7861# (5645# on the rear end and 2040# on the front end.) In 4th Gear it put out 49.25# and pulled 4680# with a wheel slip of 12.17%

Observed HP was 51.66 on the drawbar and 56.66 on the belt. When calclated for sea level, air temp and humidty it cane in at 53.66 HP on the drawbar and 58.84 on the belt. The calclated HP was so that all tractors was on the same standard so tractor to tractor could be compaired no matter what the weather was.

PS: I wish they would have tesrted the 730D at NEB. Even though both the 720D and the 730D had the same engine so NEB cerified the 730D the same as the 720D, more 730D's had the high speed transmission (2 1/2 MPH in 1st gear as with the 720D's with the standard transmission of 1 1/2 MPH) And the 730D had a modified fuel system not to increase HP but to lenghten and increase the torque curve. It would have be interesting to compare the two. I see I have a couple of typo's in the above post, but they are easy to spot. What the hay, it's 2:00AM and I'm going to bed! Least I don't have to get up in the morning to milk those HEREFORD's.

Thanks for the reply Mike. I couldn't justify $15 for 1 report. P.S. How's the search for h.p. coming with the 730s?

For around $25 or so, you can get a book with all of the tests up until 1960. Mine is an MBI book by Lorry Dunning, called the Ultimate American Farm Tractor Data Book - Nebraska Test Tractors 1920-1960. I believe I got it at Barnes and Noble.

15 bucks? Ouch. I got mine free when I went through the U of Wisc Col of Ag in the late 1960's. Ag engineering class had them for all the tractors ever tested and you could get copies of what ever you wanted. Being a disabled VET on U of Wisc's Madison campus with the V.A. picking up the tab during the highth of the war protests was quite an experiance to say the least. I kept my mouth shut and stayed on the AG campus. The Hippies were east of Bascum Hill. Nothing new to report on the 730D's yet. Hopefuly something this week. Got to get the horses and the 1946 CJ-2A JEEP ready for the parade Sunday in Cashton and if I don't get in gear, the 630 won't have the new paint on it before I run out of weather. Then I can get back to the 730D problem's.
