J D 70 - The three other valve springs are loose

Asked a question a couple of days ago about replacing a valve spring on a JD 70 gas without removing the head. Started on the project this morning and I was suprised when I found I could turn the other valve springs when the valves were supposed to be shut. One valve could actually be moved in and out slightly. What do I need to do? Shim them up some? Buy all new springs? Have the seats replaced?

Also the wrong spring came for the JD70 gas. The replacement spring that was sent is way to wide. The "keeper" mechanism on the end of the valve slips right through the center of the new spring. The oil shield on the intakes will not fit over the top of the spring. What is up with this? Did they send the wrong spring? The old ones look to be not much bigger than the diameter of a quarter.

Are these loose valves the cause of loss of power when on a constant load? Seems like it just slows down and slows down. Shift down and shift down. Runs great just choring around .... wouldn't know anything is wrong. Under a heavy load it just seems like it is "bogging down". Sort of have to clutch it and let it get its steam back up and go again.

It there JD supplier who would have these valve springs rather than a dealer?

Thanks again guys. andy

Amdy, you ask.."I found I could turn the other valve springs when the valves were supposed to be shut"-----That could be normal, those valve springs aren't all that strong. They aren't as stiff as a car engine valve springs. You should be able to just push them open a little with your hand by pushing real hard.

~On your valve spring?..There was a valve spring change at s/n 7016754 on the gas & all-fuel 70's.... It sounds like your head is a later all-fuel, or gas, or possibly an LP head & you bought the early F-53R spring. Some of the early heads were also updated to the later F-1114R springs & AA-6024R rotators at overhaul time. ~Here is probably what you need.....BIG spring =F-53R SMALL SPRING= F1114R..... .Those are the numbers that are listed but it could be subbed to a different number.

~Once the valve springs are replaced I doubt you will see a running difference under load..... If it still wont pull a load, try opening the load screw on the bottom of the carb [it's in the center of the bowl nut] start with 1/2 turn more open & keep opening it & driving the tractor until it either gets better or you have it open 3 more turns.
~If it still won't pull under load do a fuel flow test on it....Open the carb drain., then unscrew the knurled nut on top of the fuel strainer & then hold it down..You need to see a pencil sized stream of fuel for at least 30 seconds coming out of the carb drain....If not you have a fuel flow restriction, probably at the fuel strainer, or the carb's inlet strainer [big nut just above the fuel line entrance].
~If it passes the fuel flow test you might have to pull the carb's load nozzles & clean the holes in the sides of them [post back or E-mail for directions on pulling those load nozzles]

That must be it on the spring issue. My springs are alot narrower across than the ones I got from Deere which are part number F53R. I will look into the F1114R valves. Anyway ... thanks again. andy
