Can the starter ring gear for a 1952 G John Deere be pressed off & moved so that worn gear teeth are moved to where starter does not engage them?

Yes, it can-and that's not a bad idea at all. Actually, you need to heat it with a torch to get it off. Not red hot, but work all around it to heat it pretty evenly and it should tap off. You can also turn it over so that all good teeth face the starter drive, but you may have to do some filing to get the bevel on the teeth right. To put is back on you need to heat it pretty good. Best method I heard of was to bring the flywheel into your kitchen and put the ring gear on the stove so all four burners can heat it. When it's good and hot, pick it up with something and drop it over the flywheel I've also heard that this technique isn't survivable if your wife isn't away somwhere. Bill R

Thanks for the advice.I do not believe I will be heating the ring on the kitchen stove.Enjoyed the humour.
