Please Help,
I bought a 1955 John Deere tractor that was running great, but the battery went dead and
when I replaced it my post + and - were back-
wards so I took the battery back and got what
I thought was the right battery. Now my tractor
won't start? My question is on my battery cables
does - go on + and does + go on -, Please Advise.
I put new wires, new points, and condensor, and
had my coil checked, it was good. Any advise will
be appreciated.

Just a hunch. You're speaking of "Battery", as in only one battery- not two. Is your new battery 6v or 12v? I wonder if you might have gotten confused by the fact that, although you have a 12 volt system, it incorporates (2) 6 volt batteries, wired in series to create 12 volts. If you purchased one 6 volt battery it would certainly explain your not starting if it is, indeed, a cranking problem. You CAN substitute the original two battery set up with one of today's high capacity 12 volt batteries. Just be sure that the CCA rating is at least 1000. Back in 1955 batteries didn't come even close to that level. That's why they used 2 6 volt batteries.

When you say it doesn't start, does it not crank over properly when you push the starter? Or does it crank over ok but not fire up?

IF your system has not been altered, for instance by substitution of the original generator by an alternator, the ground strap for the tractor (perhaps a bare flat cable) will go to the pos (+) post of the battery with the cable going to the starter attaching to the ground (-) battery post.

Post back with more info and we'll try to help you.
