How expensive can a pony motor overhaul get on a J.D. 70? Is eletric conversion a better long term fix? What were some of the problems with them?

In both of my ponies I stuck new rings-$50, head gaskets-$20, coils-$90. points-$25, and a lot of cleaning. I've been lucky so far they run perfect. Plenty of power no smoke. I think there the best thing to have. I noticed that the pony on the Std has no thermostat and that my RC has one.

John, To overhaul a pony, one must dig deep. If this little engine needs alot its going to cost some big bucks. When its below zero a pony tractor is better for starting? You can invest some major dollars into electric. First you need to know just what the pony needs? Piston & ring kits are pricie. I have taken two engines to make one on a 730, just to keep it orginal, still had 500 dollars in it? If i went new, add another grand.

Thanks for the input. I am going to leave it with the pony start. The conversion I am sure is not with out some problems and isn't free either. I sure like those Diesels.
