I have a '49 JD A and I am in the process of replacing the radiator core. I decided to do it right and remove the hood but I would like to know the procedure. I know I have to remove the steering shaft from the box in front of the radiator...etc.

Any advise will be appreciated...well, helpful advise anyway.

Thanks, Jon Z.

Jon Z. First thing to do is unhook the "Battery", empty the gas tanks, disconnect gas line, unhook generator and wires at the amp meter, take the bolts out that bolt the dash to the hood for easy access (this needs to happen anyway) (wires will come off with the hood and gas tank if unhooked from both ends). To remove steering shaft - remove nose cover and remove two bolts from the front of steering housing (cover), remove steering wheel and key, at this point the shaft will unscrew and slide out the front of box. remove both grill screens. The hood and gas tank will lift off the tractor as one unit. I have done this by myself, but it is easier with two people. I have done this several time on my 49 "A", I hope this makes some sense to you. If not feel free to post back and I will help more.

Hey BUDD,

I think I got it. Did you mean that the steering shaft slides out through the steering box or in a forward direction? In other words, does the steering shaft slide clear through the box or does it just come out of the box in the direction of the rear of the tractor? I hope I made my confusion clear. Thanks, Jon Z.

When you take off the cover on the front of the pedistal your steering shaft will unscrew through the pedistal coming out in front of the radiator, then once it is out just pull it out, trying to keep it level, otherwise it will kind of bind alittle. My 2 cents

It worked! I got it out and the hood is off. I sprayed ookum-pocky on the nuts and bolts above and below the radiator core and will tackle that another day. It's hotter than...here (central Kansas) today. Above 100!!!

Thanks for you-alls help.
