Al, if a non power steering system it originally took trans gear oil [power steering systems use the P/S fluid]. ~Due to age & wear more than likely gear oil will just run out after a short time. A lot of people just use grease, but grease by itself doesn't migrate into the bearings without pressure or help so the bearings don't get a proper lubrication.
~Deere corn head grease is a little thinner grease & seems to work pretty good.
~I personally use a runny paste made from 140 weight trans oil & regular molly chassis grease. I mix the gear oil & grease together until it is thick poreable mixture that is about the consistency of a thick honey. I then pour that into the steering gear. The mixture will flow to all the proper places & if some of the oil in the mixture escapes out of the gear it still leaves a solid grease behind to lubricate the bearings & worm to sector.Been using that mixture for years.
