I know this isn't about tractors but it is John Deere.... My 340 spitfire quit on me and i can't figure out the problem. I rode it around about 15 minutes and it coughed a couple times then quit. It won't even fire. I put new plugs in and sprayed a touch of either in it and it popped once and won't fire anymore. its getting good spark so i can't figure out why it won't atleast run on either for a minute.. i tryed spraying it severel times And nothing... i put gas in it and mixed it at about 40:1.. anyone else have any of these old sleds that can give me some advice?? thanks in advance...

I have a 1982/3 Snowfire sled.

I too experienced the same problem & was able to obtain an aftermarket CDI unit through a dealer from Kimpex in Quebec.

However I now face a different problem: before I got this sled, someone else replaced the CDI before, and rather than fixing the connector plug for the wires that come from the stator, it was hardwired.

When I received the aftermarket CDI, the colour coding on the wires to the plug were not the same as in the sled.

Does anyone know the orientation of the wires coming from the stator to the tri-plug? The engine is a Kawasaki 340, the wires from the stator are white (from the pulser coil), red (from the exciter coil), black (goes to the kill switch), and gray (ground).

Any help would be appreciated - there's 2 ft of snow here that I can't get on to!

Andy

Sounds like the CDI box crapped out on you. I had the same problem with a 1976 JD Cyclone 340. This was 1977 and back then the box was a $100. If Deere doesn't carry parts anymore check out the vintage snowmobile sites on the web, its just like vintage tractors you can find almost anything if you look hard enough. might be a good place to start. Good luck!

Yep been tooling around with lots of sleds from 1969 to mid 80's and the ones with points get real corroded and you have to file them with the wife or girlfriends nail file and if that dosent work the points need to be adjusted any sled shop can tell you how over the phone and it could be the main coil wire near breaking ie: 1 or 2 strands left inside the electrical casing that you can't see. we checked my jd 300 like that with a meter from auto zone and gave her a pull. good luck
